Bitter melon is a commonly consumed vegetable throughout the sub-tropical world (China, India, Thailand, East Africa, The Caribbean, Central and South America) and is known by various names, such as balsam pear, bitter gourd, carilla, cerasee (wild variety), cundeamor, goo-fah, and karela. Bitter melon is a vigorous, tendril-bearing, frost tender, annual vine of the cucumber family that will grow rapidly to 12-20’ long in a single growing season.
